Innovate without fear of error with BCP iO

Innovating at the speed of trust

“We want to learn how to manage failures to build a more innovative culture.” With this premise, theBCP iO Talent Management team, led by Kareen Rivas, invited us to design a workshop centered on failure management and psychological safety as levers for innovation.

The session, facilitated by Pepe Villatoro, CEO and co-founder ofFuckup Nights, brought together more than 40 collaborators to reflect on fear as a cultural barrier, the conditions necessary for experimentation without judgment, and how to lead with vulnerability.

What happens when we fear making mistakes?

Fear of failure is one of the main enemies of innovation. While it’s a universal and even functional emotion, when unmanaged, it becomes a barrier to proposing ideas, making decisions, or taking risks.

One of the most impactful moments of the workshop occurred when participants identified their most common workplace fears, ranging from damaging their reputation to disappointing others or being punished for mistakes.

“Our main cultural battle is against fear and the gravitational pull that attracts us back to conventional ways of thinking and behaving.” – Eric "Astro" Teller

Through guided reflections and live polls, the group explored how many valuable ideas never see the light of day because of fear. But what if we could let go of that fear?

Psychological Safety: The foundation for daring teams

Defined as the shared belief that a team is a safe space to tatake interpersonal risks without fear of being judged, psychological safety became one of the workshop’s core themes.

Participants explored the key benefits that psychological safety brings to teams:

  • +76% participation in conversations and brainstorming
  • Greater diversity and talent attraction
  • More disruptive ideas and critical thinking
  • Stronger trust and authenticity in workplace relationships

Through a live team-mapping activity, attendees reflected on their current levels of psychological safety, identified gaps, and designedconcrete actions to improve.

Building the three superpowers of high-performance teams

The most powerful part of the workshop was the collective reflection around the three superpowers that fuel innovative teams:

1. Vulnerability

Being vulnerable is not weakness—it’s courage. The leaders of tomorrow are those who can ask for help, admit mistakes, and open honest conversations.

2. Resilience

Failures are not avoided; they are navigated. Crises are moments of malleability , during which new habits are formed. Resilient teams are built through sincerity, empathy, purpose, and humility.

3. Constructive error management

Failure is not punished; it is analyzed. An innovative culture transforms mistakes into valuable information, communicates them without judgment, and focuses on process improvement. Celebrating attempts and providing clear, private feedback stood out as key takeaways.

Lessons that shape culture

Through interactive activities and open discussions, the BCP iO team experienced a space that helped them rethink how to innovate, how to lead and how to manage failure.

Because when we stop seeing failure as an obstacle and start embracing it as a natural part of the process, we stop fearing our boldest ideas—and unlock new levels of innovation.

And in a digital team shaping the future of finance, this is not only valuable—it’s indispensable.

“Safety does not mean lack of accountability. It means creating spaces where everyone can participate without bias, be heard, and propose—even if they don’t get it right the first time.” Pepe Villatoro

In this edition, BCP iO celebrated efforts without stigmatizing failure and empowered its teams to lead by example, defeat ego, and embrace vulnerability.

About the collaboration
