FEMSA and Fuckup Nights build safe spaces to share mistakes and strengthen leadership from vulnerability.
"Failure is no longer a stigma: it is pure value. Without it, there is no iteration, no pivots, no unicorn possible".
With this forceful phrase, Luis Fernando Ramírez -a member of the Fuckup Nights Brain Trust and Sustainability Manager at FEMSA - kicked off a private event that brought together more than 80 legal and corporate affairs professionals from all over Latin America.
The mission: to talk about failure openly, honestly and without prejudice.
FEMSA y Fuckup Nightshave shared for several years a passion for creating spaces with more humane and resilient work cultures.
From supporting the first editions of the movement, to promoting initiatives such as the Failure Institute, FEMSA has been committed to opening difficult conversations within the corporate world.
This new edition with its legal team was organized by Miranda Campos and Eugenia Roberta Del Real, who understood that behind every protocol, contract or clause... there are also people. And that these spaces of openness can strengthen the organizational culture, and transform the way teams are led.
"A good in-house lawyer doesn't put out fires; he installs smoke detectors."
With humor, brutal honesty and memes included, Javier shared the failure he experienced when he didn't escalate a data problem on a key project in time. The story included anxiety, sleepless nights, and the fear of losing his master's sponsorship... and everything else that was going on in his life.
Main lessons shared in Javier's story:
Camila shared her experience leading a legal contingency in Brazil that ended in a lost case, despite having the best experts on board. From her story, she highlighted the weight of guilt and the importance of being resilient to move forward.
Learnings shared by Camila:
Talking about failures is not easy - especially in the corporate world, where we tend to celebrate only victories. Sharing vulnerability does not weaken us. On the contrary: it strengthens the team, brings us closer together and reminds us that the road to excellence also passes through our "detours" - shared Camila as a conclusion in her social networks.
One of the highlights of the event was the open mic: a space where any attendee could come up and share their story of failure. What no one anticipated was that Roberto Campa -Directorof Corporate Affairs at FEMSA-would be encouraged to tell his own story of failure, without a script or preparation, but building a safe space together with the team.
His participation was not only surprising because it was unexpected, but also because of the honesty with which he shared his story. The fact that a leader opened up in front of the entire team sent a clear message: vulnerability is also leadership at FEMSA.
At the end of the event, the satisfaction survey clearly revealed the effect the stories shared had on the audience. It was not only an emotional and authentic evening, but an experience that left its mark on the way the team perceives failure and vulnerability:
"These types of conversations are necessary if we want more human teams, more honest cultures and more conscious leaders." - Shared Luis Fernando Ramirez
This Fuckup Nights and FEMSA event demonstrated that when authentic spaces are opened, where failures are no longer a cause for shame, but become tools, stronger teams, more humane leaders and more resilient organizational cultures are built.
Our events teach teams real leadership is built on mistakes, tough decisions and a lot of resilience.
If you want to create a space where people can speak without fear, connect from vulnerability and learn from failure with honesty, let's make it happen together.
