There’s no denying that social media is a very powerful communication tool. Those of us who use it daily and suddenly decide to start a business may fall into the trap of thinking that “anyone” knows how to use it, or we may fail to view it as an investment of time and money.

In this article, we'll discuss how to sell on Facebook and Instagram.

How do I sell on Facebook?

There are several options:

  • Facebook Marketplace: It's like Mercado Libre, except it's right on Facebook and payments are handled directly between users. It's not very reliable from the buyer's perspective.
  • Facebook Store: Here , your customers can buy directly from you without leaving the Facebook app or website. This would be the best recommendation, because it’s easier for users to buy there, but you’ll need to learn how to install the Meta Pixel—a code that goes inside your own website’s code. Meta offers courses and a step-by-step guide for installing it, but don’t be afraid to ask for help: nobody is born knowing everything.
  • Photo albums as catalogs: This solution takes more time, but it’s actually easier in some ways if you don’t install the Meta Pixel. You can create an album for each type of product or service—for example, one for blouses, another for pants, and another for shoes. You’ll need to include the price and product details for each item in the photos. When an item sells, you remove the photo from the album. Your followers could also share the albums.

How do you sell on Instagram?

Here are a few options:

  • Instagram Shop: This is an additional tab on your business profile, and it’s linked to your business’s Facebook Page. If you have time to set everything up, this would be the most professional option so far, but only if you have a website with an online store. You’ll need to configure it with your Facebook Shop so that they’re linked. This is the most professional approach because it makes it much easier for customers to make purchases without leaving the app.
  • Posts and Stories: This is where you upload photos of your products and ask people to send you a DM for full details. It’s not easy for your customers to make a purchase, because they might be reluctant to ask for prices, and they might have to wait a long time for a reply—or never get one at all—not to mention potential disagreements over payment. Another issue is that you have to archive the photo of items you’ve already sold. If you simply update the caption of each photo to say “SOLD,” people who visit your profile will be disappointed when they read that caption because they assume that if it’s posted on your profile, it’s still available.

That said, it’s worth mentioning that there are several types of Instagram accounts. Through a business account, a brand can promote its services or products and have better control over its metrics. Creator accounts are designed for “influencers”—individuals who, while they don’t run a business, use their image to promote the content they create, as well as that of sponsors, to their audience.
