The Pygmalion Effect at Work: How to Influence Well

Prophecies that come true at work…

7 ways to influence the right way

Raise your hand if you have a good sixth sense ✋

Surely it's happened to you: you meet someone and within seconds you know you won't get along.

Still, you try to smile, shake hands, listen to their ideas, and keep a polite conversation… but nothing flows. Weeks later, you cross paths in the hallway and they roll their eyes at you. "I knew it," you think. The prophecy came true.

In reality, it wasn't your sixth sense; it was the Pygmalion Effect, a psychological phenomenon where our expectations influence other people's behavior and performance.

From your very first impression, your attitude subtly shifted, your gestures, tone, attention, etc. The other person picked up on that change and responded with the same energy, confirming your "theory".

This phenomenon applies in many areas of your life. What you expect from your coworkers, subordinates, partner, students, friends, etc., shapes their behavior, and you'll likely get the result you expected to see.

‍Just  like (in the example), you ended up with a rude glance in the hallway, there's also enormous potential to bring out the best in the people around you.

It's a superpower. And as you know, it comes with great responsibility: your expectations can lift or limit the potential of those around you. Este mes te vamos a contar cómo utilizar tus expectativas de la mejor manera.

7 ways to influence the right way at work

1. Be clear and take action:

Express your expectations and the qualities your team needs. Don't hold back positive feedback and publicly recognize good work. Be consistent and give your team the same  trust, challenges, and responsibilities you would give to your ideal team.

2. Expect the best: No exceptions.

Embrace the belief that everyone has something valuable to contribute. Focus on seeing  people's potential and find ways to bring out the best in everyone as a team.

3. Explore your biases:

The first step to eliminating harmful biases is recognize them. Being aware of your own subjectivity makes it easier to set it aside when making decisions or interacting with any team member.

4. Provide tools:

You can't expect great results without the right conditions to do the job. Make sure to provide the necessary resources and ensure everyone has equal access to quality tools.

5. Analyze your behavior:

In day-to-day work, it's easy to overlook body language, gestures, or tones that reflect personal opinions. Identify these signals, especially toward people you may have treated differently. Lean on trusted colleagues to help you detect and correct those moments.

6. Feedback and accountability:

Use impartial feedback methods and make it a tool to drive genuine growth for everyone equally. Recognize achievements and give sufficient responsibility so for people to make their own decisions and learn from their mistakes.

7. Manage your own expectations:

We can't control what others expect from us, and in some ways, that can be freeing. What we can control is our own expectations. If you notice limiting beliefs about yourself, setting healthy and realistic expectations can be a way to prove those perceptions wrong.

At the core, it all comes down to motivation— and a team's perceived trust to reach its full potential.

Sometimes this can be a double-edged sword, but when used wisely, it can forge powerful teams, ready to take on any challenge.
